Holiday, 2012

single channel video, inflatable boat, drawers, chair

We often use holidays as an escape from domesticity, our jobs, routine and the stress of city living. Although we remove ourselves physically from these things, the thought of them often continues on throughout our vacation time.

Holiday is a documentation of a performance in which I physically remove myself from the city I live in, Canberra. I go on a micro-holiday to Spinnaker island on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. What I thought would be a relaxing afternoon began to go wrong when I got caught in traffic, had a big pimple on my nose and upon arrival, I was greeted by the presence of hundreds of nesting seagulls, covering the island. As I walk around the island, sounds of domesticity and the city continue to plague me, reminding me of what I was trying to escape.
